Track your progress

Measure what matters

Tracking progress does not need to be complicated. A few useful measures, reviewed regularly, can help you stay focused, make informed decisions and improve how your business runs.

Know what is improving
See where problems are building
Make better decisions with real information
Stay on track with your goals

1. Start with the right measures

Track the things that tell you whether your business is healthy, efficient and moving in the right direction.

Financial

Monitor revenue, profit, costs, cash flow and overdue invoices.

Customers

Look at enquiry rates, conversions, repeat business, feedback and customer satisfaction.

Operations

Review delivery times, workload, productivity, stock levels or service quality.

2. Choose a few key metrics

You do not need to measure everything. Focus on a small number of figures that help you understand performance.

AreaWhat to trackWhy it helps
FinancialRevenue, profit, expenses, cash flowShows whether the business is sustainable
CustomersEnquiries, sales conversion, repeat customersHelps you understand demand and retention
MarketingWebsite visits, social engagementShows what is bringing people in
OperationsTurnaround time, capacity, missed deadlinesHighlights pressure points and inefficiencies
GrowthGoal progress, new offers, visibilityHelps you measure forward movement

3. Build a review routine

Regular reviews help you stay close to what is happening, rather than only noticing issues when they become urgent.

Weekly check-in

Review your main numbers
Check what was completed
Note any delays or issues
Confirm priorities for next week

Monthly review

Compare results over time
Look for patterns or changes
Review what is helping or hurting performance
Adjust your plan for the next month

4. Look for patterns, not just numbers

The figures matter, but what they mean matters more. Look for trends, changes and recurring problems.

What changedWhat it might meanWhat to ask next
Enquiries droppedFewer people are finding you or respondingHas marketing changed? Is demand lower?
Costs increasedSpending has gone up or efficiency has fallenWhat is driving the increase?
Repeat business is downCustomers may not be returningIs service quality slipping? Are you following up?
Projects take longerCapacity or workflow issues may be buildingWhere are the delays happening?

5. Turn insight into action

Use what you learn to make small, practical changes. Progress tracking is most useful when it leads to action.

Keep doing

Continue what is clearly working well.

Fix

Deal with problems that are slowing you down.

Test

Try small changes and monitor the results.

Refocus

Spend more time on the work that matters most.

Keep it simple

A tracking system only works if you use it. Start small, review regularly and focus on measures that help you make better decisions.
